On May, 9th 2018 Steadysun presented its work on the “Assessment of Control Strategies Performance in Islanded PV-Diesel System” at the 3rd International Hybrid Power Systems Workshop. This work was carried out in partnership with the French National Institute for Solar Energy (CEA-INES).
Diesel generators were until now the most source of electricity used on islanded sites with no access or with an unstable access to power network. With the rise of renewable energies and their decreasing costs, hybrid power system combining such energy and traditional diesel generators offers interesting solution for those sites, by cutting operation costs and emissions constraints.
The aim of this work was to assess the control strategies performance of such photovoltaic (PV)-diesel hybrid system by carrying out a simulation and an experimental test. During the simulation, a 100 kW hybrid system was piloted using solar power production forecasting delivered through our steadyEye Sky imager technology.
The results showed that the solution improves the management of hybrid systems by allowing large OPEX gains as well as the battery backup sizing optimization.
